I know it sounds blunt and harsh, but here's my opinion:
I took a good look at this, and I'm being absolutely honest here, I find the idea of playing as the unnamed Duck Hunt dog almost laughable. I'm sorry, but in my opinion it would be better if the dog made a brief cameo appearance somewhere in the game (or wasn't included in the game at all) than to be featured as a playable fighter. From my perspective as a Duck Hunt player, the dog itself was a mere joke that was hardly vital to the game experience at all, likely to have been a throw-in to make the game slightly more entertaining. And when it all comes down to it, there are many and much more significant characters from the history of gaming that suit SSBC, and the dog from Duck Hunt simply does not outweigh the video game representatives that we've chosen for a place in the roster.

^^ This, but to a lesser extent. If there's a duck hunt dog stage, he could appear in the background. And you would hear shots and see bullets or whatever with ducks as well.

I really like this idea. I, personally, want to see this guy in.

Stage seems much more likely than a character. To be completely honest.
-shrug- I half agree with Phantom.

He could be an assist trophy.

I think he should just be an expansion. He seems much better that way.

And when it all comes down to it, there are many and much more significant characters from the history of gaming that suit SSBC, and the dog from Duck Hunt simply does not outweigh the video game representatives that we've chosen for a place in the roster. Not harsh at all, I would never take offense to an honest opinion, which I do appreciate. In my opinion, no matter if his purpose in the Duck Hunt game was for entertaining purpose or something else, entertainment is just one of the few elements that makes a good gaming experience other than gameplay, competition, etc. Pretty much its not like his humorous role was not important. If you think about it, when many fans talk about Duck Hunt today, the first thing they talk about is the Dog, not how many ducks or flying disc they were able to shoot at or what level they reached. I think the Dog overshadowed the memory of the gameplay experience with his appearance in the classic game. Loved or hated, he build a notoriety inside and outside the gaming world. Even those who never played the Duck Hunt game or were born years after the launch of the game knows who he is, while other classic characters like Balloon Fighter, Ice Climbers, ROB, & Pit (to a lesser extent) were either forgotten or somewhat remembered. He is pretty much the most famous retro character of Nintendo. DH Dog is actually considered as an Iconic gaming character. Even Mr GAW (before Melee was an un-named character) was far forgotten while DH Dog still had his name come up here and there. ROB does have importance to Nintendo history, but if he was never playable for Brawl, I very sure many would say he would make a bad choice of a character, but turned out to be a good playable one. DH Dog can potentially turn to that same route ROB did. As much as I really like the idea of being able to play as characters like Ristar, and glad you made him playable, but he really is another forgotten character that many barely remember. DH Dog is more well known. In my opinion, DH Dog sounds more significant than Ristar, and he is actually a Nintendo character. Plus before we had Pokemon, Metroid, etc. the Mario series, Duck Hunt, Zelda, & Punch Out were some of Nintendo's top series during the NES era. I know most of your roster consist of top named characters, but you have to agree that its good to add obscure choices on your roster to add a twist on representatives. Sometimes you need to add someone unexpecting, and very unique. Im not complaining about your roster at all, I like all the choices so far, but having the most obvious choices in a fan game makes things way too predictable. Since SSF and other Smash fan games never made DH Dog playable, I think it would be a good opportunity to add this one in to let fans know that they dont know who to expect in the roster while other smash games are just giving out the same expecting fan characters. Also, I think many take his role from the Duck Hunt game way too lightly and dont really see the clearer picture of it, thus the reason why many dont take him serious. Which makes him an underrated characters. His role made the game memorable. If it wasnt for him, I dont think many would really remember the Duck Hunt game. He, along with Mario & Link were one of the few of Nintendo's first famous characters, and that fame lead to more success for Nintendo. Sometimes the smallest roles can make an impact Plus imagine how many fans would like the opportunity to actually put a beating on that dog after almost 30 years. Or they can have fun laughing at other after throwing them off stage when they play as him. And GY came up with an interesting idea of his role in the story mode on the 1st page. Question, what is an expansion character? And how does it work?

I'm sorry, but is it so much to call him "Laughing Dog"? I mean, "Duck Hunt Dog" doesn't really sound professional in my opinion, and he is often referred to as the "Laughing Dog" due to him laughing at you in Duck Hunt.

I see where your coming from, but honestly I think either name can work if you ask me. Plus I kind of got use to "Duck Hunt Dog" ;D

An expansion is a character made that you can download optionally to put in your game.
Maybe he could just be an expansion. Then the people who want him could get him, and Phantom could.... Not have to see him on the CSS?

Actually, I can almost guarantee the laughing Duck Hunt dog will appear somewhere in the game... but I can't spoil where that will take place.
I'll give you a hint, though, he'll do exactly what he did in the game, but he (most likely at least) won't be playable.

My guess would be a stage, or somewhere in adventure mode.

I appreciate that you willing to put the character in Crusade in some way, but if somehow I can find or edit a sprite sheet, is there any chance of at least being an expansion character? Only if it is still possible in some way. So far 2/3 of positive votes. Anymore votes, supporters, ideas, or interest in seeing him as an expansion character?

With what Phantom said, I believe it's over. He's only going to make a cameo... :/

Yeah, with devs having dictatorship control over expansions, looks like the dog isn't gonna make it.

Supposed to be.
But devs have already said that they had already decided the expansion list.
