I thought of this new item:
NAME: Status ball. (Probably the name sucks but if you can think for a better name I would be glad)
APPEARANCE: Is just a ball with a question mark. (More or less like the pitfall)
EFFECT: When somebody touches it, it makes all players or only some have ONE random status effect like for example: turn big or small, become metallic, have a flower in the head, become faster or slower, have superspicy curry, have more or less gravity, etc. It may sometimes do nothing to some players.

Very much so.
You could totally have a special Lightning that only ever shrinks the user, like with Poison Mushrooms.

Yeah, totally. Except that Lightning is one item, whereas Poison and Mega Mushrooms are separate (you can even use item switch to turn one or the other off).

Um, yeah, another item idea:

Name: Television
Inspired by: Television item from Epic Mickey

Basically, a small T.V. appears on the stage as any normal item would. When a player activates it, the T.V. grows a bit larger and starts to show a small preview of the NES game Super Mario Bros. Any enemy in the T.V.'s range (I'd say 1-2 characters length from all sides), walks over to the television and is so engrossed in watching it that they cannot move... leaving them wide open for ze killings, no? Television lasts for about 5 seconds or so.
