Actually the Characters Remaining number is right under the text box. Activation Code is of means of security. Like what DGN said, you can change your name and avatar. You may also upload pictures to tinypic.com.

Oh, I just realized what you meant by characters remaining. That's just a handy way to see how much room you have left for a post.
