I couldn't tell if this was the official Smash website or not, even the translations is a bit difficult. But if this is the official site then yea this would be the most reliable.
But I wouldn't count Meowth out soo soon.

I would. The only thing Meowth had going for him honestly was his status as an "almost-Smasher". With that being taken away, he hasn't a chance anymore.
When it comes to Pokemon, they go for the games more. Pikachu: The Mascot and most popular Pokemon in Japan at the time of 64. Jigglypuff: The second most popular Pokemon in Japan at the time. Also easy to make using Kirby's model. Mewtwo: A malicous entity in the Pokemon world (that isn't human as they weren't planning on using humans), as well as being credited as the Strongest Pokemon (again, at the time), as well as being the only humanoid Legendary (at the time). Also had a backstory, unlike other Pokemon. Pichu: Really popular, represented the 2nd Generation, and served as a clone to boost up Melee's roster. Pokemon Trainer: Represents the player character. Charizard is one of the most popular Pokemon, Squirtle is also one of the most popular, and Ivysaur was added to be an inbetween stage for them. Lucario: Posterchild of the 4th Generation, and first non-Legendary to star in a film (aside from Unown). One of the most popular Pokemon of the 4th Generation.
As for Meowth: Represents the anime more than the games, due to being obscure in the game community.

But then, if they will go by the game more than the anime, then why is Jigglypuff in Smash in the first place? Sure it is popular in Japan, but why? I doubt it is the games that made Jigglypuff popular cause she was equal IF not less important than Meowth. She was famous because of the anime. So why should it be different with Meowth?

WRONG!
Jigglypuff's (and Pikachu's) popularity came BEFORE the anime ever existed. Which is why Pikachu eventually became the mascot for Pokemon and starred in the anime as the main character's Pokemon.
As for Meowth, he was popular at the time, but if I remember right, it was: 1. Pikachu 2. Jigglypuff 3. Squirtle 4. Meowth
However, at this time, Arceus takes the top spot with Pika in second. Neither Jiggz, Squirtle, NOR Meowth made it in the Top 10.
Had Jiggz not been in the original Smash, she wouldn't even come CLOSE to being in SSB4.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Golden.
Because that was then, and this is now. The anime has become worse and worse since the original, and pretty much everyone knows that. It's completely repetitive. You can sum up an entire season just by saying "Ash gets a starter, meets his female partner, meets his rival, catches a pokemon, beats his rival (usually with Pikachu), gets gym badge, team rocket shows up in 2 episodes out of 3, rival battle, gym battle, team rocket for a few episodes, random backstory, Ash catches another pokemon, cycle continues until he has all eight badges and loses in the Pokemon League." And Jigglypuff will continue to be in Smash because she's one of the original 12 and the only glass cannon character.
Meowth only shows up because the idiots who write the show decided that Team Rocket had to show up every 3 episodes to try and steal some random pokemon.

As for Jigglypuff's possible boost of popularity today due to Smash Bros I can agree on.
Now I would like to know about this list. If your talking about that list that was posted in this forum, then there is one mistake here. Meowth was listed number 5 on the list. The other 4 that surpassed him where Arceus, Darkrai, Deoxys, & Pikachu.

It was actually Mew, not Meowth. There was a typo there.
@detta: You're really missing out on B/W, as it does not follow that formula.

I gave up on the anime after Advanced ended, except for the movies. So yes, I am missing out on B/W. The only things that would surprise me in the anime at this point is if Team Rocket stopped stalking Ash or if Ash actually won the Pokemon League for once. Sure, it would be kind of predictable and redundant if he won every time, but losing every time is even more redundant, and at least we'd get to see much cooler battles in later rounds.
Anyways, that's enough about me hating half the anime.

Team Rocket has their own missions assigned by Giovanni because they got a PRRRRROMOTION! because he was led to believe that it was them that got rid of teams Aqua, Magma, and Galactic. Now, they DO in fact run into Ash on occasion, and DO try to take Pikachu and other Pokemon, but it's concidental that they cross paths (or is it fate?). And when they lose, they don't blast off anymore, they're smart and actual RETREAT when a situation doesn't look in their favor. And they use smoke bombs now. They actually act serious now and less campy. As for Ash winning a League, he COULD'VE won the Sinnoh League, but plot devices made him go against a guy that used LEGENDARY Pokemon and had no real backstory. The guy used DARKRAI and LATIOS. Now Ash made some piss poor choices for that fight, like using GIBLE of all Pokemon and SWELLOW instead of say, Charizard. And this is when he KNEW he was going against a Darkrai. @smashteam: Only one source said Meowth while all others said Mew. I'm pretty sure it's obvious which one's wrong. Also: pokemonblackandwhite.net/?p=1647This has the actual list. The only non-Legendaries on that list are Pikachu and Eevee.

Well I can't really argue much with the poll, but I find it "i dont know how to call it" that the legendary Pokemon take up 80% of the top 10 poll. I assume that high percentage of the votes came from mainly the game players rather than anything else.

"Well I can't really argue much with the poll, but I find it [obvious] that the legendary..." Obvious is the word you're looking for, due to people thinking that they are much more powerful than the normal pokemon. And really, I can understand why those pokemon got those rankings: 1. Arceus is considered the god of all pokemon, and was the last pokemon of the 4th generation. 2. Darkrai would be like a nightmare, and apparently they're quite fond of dream inflicted stuff. 3. Deoxys was the last pokemon of hoenn and the last pokemon at the time, and his amazing ability to shapeshift into other forms based on stats is pretty cool as well. 4. Pika's the mascot of pokemon, and is adorableeeeee 5. Mew was the last pokemon of Kanto, the first generation, and is liked for being very, very mysterious and knowing every pokemon move. 6. Aside from being SO ADOORABUUUUUUHHHHHH, I don't know why she's up that high. My guess is due to being able to change into a sky forme. 7. EEVEE IS EVEN CUTAAAAAAAAAR, and is well known for evolving into 7 different forms. 8. Rayquaza was a dragon and was the last pokemon of hoenn to be captured not by an event. 9. Jirachi was the second to last pokemon in the hoenn dex, and could grant wishes. Who wouldn't want a pokemon irl to grant you wishes? Even I wanted to own one irl at once. 10. I don't know why he's this low, but the second to last pokemon of Kanto and originally the strongest pokemon out there.
I think this was pre-Unova, though, because I'm actually surprised not to see Genesect there.

#6 is Shaymin, one of the Sinnoh event Pokemon. In fact, Shaymin comes right before Arceus in the PokeDex. DGN: I'm just glad he's ON the list, to be honest. Think of it this way; of the 649 Pokemon in existance, Mewtwo is the 10th most popular. That's an accomplishment.

First off, Pokemon is a PREDOMINANTLY VIDEO GAME SERIES. OF COURSE MOST OF THE VOTES CAME FROM GAME PLAYERS. I mean honestly. I doubt there's anyone in the world who watches the anime but hasn't played at least one of the games at one point in their lives. Same with the TCG players. Now, on to Generic. 4. I'm pretty sure the poll was before 5th gen was announced. Genesect obviously wouldn't be on the poll anyways because Nintendo hasn't ANNOUNCED its existence yet. Same goes for Meloetta and Keldeo, the first of which would undoubtedly be up high on the polls. Anyways, you're wrong on quite a few points here. 1. Arceus has amazing stats (last legendary, no duh) and has a Mew-styled movepool, being able to learn all TM and HM attacks, as well as the fact that knowing your opponent has an Arceus doesn't help in the least if you don't know what it's holding. This makes it extremely unpredictable and made it a great choice for teams. 2. Darkrai: 1. Is freaking epic. 2. has amazing stats. 3. has a move that puts two pokemon to sleep at once. 4. Has an ability that builds upon his signature move. 5. Was released in an event knowing Spacial Rend and Roar of Time, the signature moves of Palkia and Dialga, respectively. Of course he's up high; he's like the Dark type version of Mewtwo but more epic. 3. Deoxys has the highest base Attack and Special Attack stats of all pokemon when in Attack form, and the highest base speed when in Speed form. THAT's why he's popular. 4. Nothing wrong with this point. Everyone knows Pikachu; he's almost as recognizable as Mario is. Remember the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? There's multiple Pokemon balloons, but, IIRC, only one Mario balloon. 5. Mew is Mew. The ORIGINAL unobtainable Pokemon. And Mew still holds up well in the competitive scene because of its massive movepool and great stats. 6. Shaymin is Shaymin. Co-Starring in a movie helped somewhat, but the fact that it can change from a hedgehog into a chihuahua by coming in contact with a flower is pretty cool too. Not to mention (aside from Grass-type Arceus) she's the only grass-type legendary. 7. Eevee... well, a lot could be said. Its evolutions are very popular in OU because they're either fast and powerful (Jolteon, Espeon) or extremely good walls (Umbreon). Also, in Colosseum, you start with Umbreon and Espeon, and in XD: Gale of Darkness, you start with an Eevee and are free to choose what to evolve it into. 8. Rayquaza = Fast, Powerful, and weatherproof. Air Lock makes it extremely useful because of the Kyogre wall and its Drizzle ability normally giving Thunder 100% accuracy. Air Lock neglects that. It also prevents damage from Hail and Sandstorm, which are also very popular weather-effects in competitive pokemon. 9. Jirachi = Doom Desire = Amazing steel type attack. Not to mention steel-type = wall against half of Uber tier. 10. Mewtwo has fallen from his prior glory because he hasn't gotten a whole lot of new stuff with the new generations, unlike many other Pokemon have. His moveset is still predominantly Psychic-type, and with Darkrai running around that's not something to be proud of like it was in 1st gen when nothing could beat Psychic (the attack, not the type). Despite this, he's still extremely good due to his amazing stats.

Actually, the poll was during 5th Gen, as the winner would be released through Dream World.

He never said that. We're talking about the ORIGINAL Smash Brothers. Not the new one. Meaning Pit was not planned for Super Smash Brothers 64, not not planned for SSB4. >_>
