Had an interesting idea on how Rival Trainer would work:
That's right, Rival only uses Eevee. But there's a catch. Eevee can evolve.
The idea is you start as Eevee, and the first time Eevee uses a Final Smash, the match freezes, zooms in on Eevee, and four icons appear above it. They are the TCG icons for Colorless (Normal), Fire, Water, and Electric.
When one is selected (arrow keys, then attack button to select), one of these happens:
1. The Colorless is selected, and Rival tosses an Everstone to Eevee. Eevee flashes like it's going to evolve, but it doesn't. Eevee is permanently an Eevee now. If Eevee gets another Final Smash, Eevee uses Last Resort.
2. The Fire is selected, and Rival tosses a Fire Stone to Eevee. Eevee flashes and evolves into Flareon, and is a Flareon for the rest of the match. If Flareon gets a Final Smash, it uses Lava Plume.
3. The Water is selected, and Rival tosses a Water Stone to Eevee. Eevee flashes and evolves into Vaporeon and is a Vaporeon for the rest of the match. If Vaporeon gets a Final Smash, it uses Muddy Water.
4. The Electric is selected, and Rival tosses a Thunder Stone to Eevee. Eevee flashes and evolves into Jolteon and is a Jolteon for the rest of the match. If Jolteon gets a Final Smash, it uses Discharge.
This will be further expanded in the Moveset section.
Why, you might ask, is this better than the alternative we have right now (Gengar, Scizor, Aggron)?
Because Eevee is the only non-Legendary other than Pikachu to be on the Top 10 Most Popular Pokemon of Japan (currently).
Also, Vaporeon is playable in Super Smash Land, a fangame for Smash that is supposed to be a Game Boy demake. Vaporeon fit in just fine, so I figured, why not the other main Eevee forms? (Gen. 1 only).
As for the moveset...
Eevee, Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon share normal attacks, but have differing specials. Here's the full moveset:
POKEMON RIVAL (EEVEE, VAPOREON, JOLTEON, FLAREON)
Gimmick: Rival is in the background while Eevee fights. When Eevee gets a Final Smash for the 1st time, there is an option to either evolve it or not. If not, Eevee will not get another chance to evolve for the rest of the match. If it does evolve, it stays as its evolution for the remainder of the match. If Eevee or any of its evolutions get another Final Smash, they will use an attack.
Neutral Combo: ALL: Headbutt.
Neutral Forward: ALL: Mule kick.
Dash Attack: ALL: Tackle.
Neutral Up: ALL: Stand on hind legs and push upwards with front legs. Similar to Ness’s Neutral Up.
Neutral Down: ALL: Kick front paws forward while lying down.
Forward Smash: E/V/F: Tail smash. J: Tail spike extend.
Up Smash: ALL: Back flip, hitting with back legs.
Down Smash: ALL: Plop on belly and spread front legs forward and back legs backward to kick both sides. Pretty much a four legged splits.
Neutral Air: ALL: Roll like Pikachu.
Forward Air: ALL: Swing front legs overhead.
Back Air: E/V/F: Swing tail. (Similar to Mewtwo in Melee) J: Kick both hind legs back.
Up Air: ALL: Stretch upward, and swat with front paws.
Down Air: ALL: Cannonball.
Grab: ALL: Grab with front paws while standing on hind legs.
Pummel: All: Bite the opponent.
Forward Throw: ALL: Roll forward while holding on to opponent, then tosses them forward. (Think Pikachu’s Back Throw, but forward instead.)
Up Throw: ALL: Flip up and tosses opponent upward.
Back Throw: E/V/F: Flip back and smacks opponent with tail. J: Flip back and stabs opponent with rear spikes.
Down Throw: ALL: Tosses opponent down, and dive-bombs with head.
Neutral Special:
a. Eevee: Sand Attack: Eevee tosses sand forward. This does a small amount of damage.
b. Vaporeon: Water Gun: Vaporeon shoots a blob of water that falls at an arc. If the water hits the ground, it leaves a puddle. Only one puddle can stay on the field.
c. Jolteon: Thunder Wave: Jolteon creates an electric field in front of it that temporarily stuns the opponent.
d. Flareon: Fire Fang: Flareon jumps forward and bites with its mouth ablaze.
Forward Special:
a. Eevee: Echoed Voice: Eevee creates shockwaves of sound around it that fly in multiple, separate directions. They can bounce off the ground and walls, and if they make contact with Eevee, they WILL harm it. If used on the ground, shockwaves don’t fly off from under Eevee. If used in the air, shockwaves DO come from under Eevee as well as above and around it. These shockwaves deal multiple hits with non-flinching damage.
b. Vaporeon: Bubblebeam: Vaporeon shoots a stream of bubbles.
c. Jolteon: Wild Charge: Jolteon charges forward while an electric aura is around it. It’s a powerful move, but will harm Jolteon some if it makes contact.
d. Flareon: Smog: Flareon shoots a stream of smoke like Bowser’s Flame Breath or Charizard’s Flamethrower.
Up Special:
a. Eevee: Substitute: Eevee performs a “ninja trick” by disappearing while a Substitute Doll is formed in its place. Eevee then reappears in the direction that is held when the Doll is formed.
b. Vaporeon: Acid Armor: Vaporeon dissolves, and comes out of the puddle from Water Gun. If used on the ground, where it used Acid Armor, a new puddle is formed while the old puddle is gone. If used in the air, no puddle is formed. If there is no puddle when Acid Armor is used, the move fails.
c. Jolteon: Pin Missile: Jolteon mysteriously flies upward while performing summersaults as spikes are shot out from all around it for a short distance.
d. Flareon: Fire Spin: Flareon incases itself in a fire tornado and flies upward.
Down Special:
a. Eevee: Dig: Eevee buries itself underground, waits a few seconds, then pops back up and attacks. If used on a platform that you can fall through, it just falls through.
b. Vaporeon: Aqua Ring: Vaporeon creates a water ring around it that starts above it and travels down. Can reflect projectiles. Despite it being made of water, it has the curious ability to freeze an opponent, though this is rare.
c. Jolteon: Double Kick: Jolteon turns around, and pushes itself with its front legs to leap with both back legs in front to kick. Think of it like a flying mule kick.
d. Flareon: Overheat: Flareon stands in place and creates a devastatingly strong fire field around it. The fire does not make the opponent flinch, but it racks up damage quickly and gives Flareon Super Armor. Based on a few attacks from Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion. Flareon can’t use this move in succession, and needs a few seconds before it can be used again. On top of that, the move has HORRIBLE start up lag and ending lag.
Final Smash:
a. First Time Use: Evolution (or "What? Your Eevee is evolving..!"): The match freezes as the camera zooms in on Eevee while four icons appear above its head. They are the TCG symbols for Colorless, Water, Electric, and Fire. You select one by the arrow keys, and select using the Special Attack button. If Colorless is selected, Rival tosses an Everstone to Eevee. Eevee then flashes like it’s going to evolve, but it doesn’t. Eevee is now Eevee for the rest of the match. If Water is selected, Rival tosses a Water Stone to Eevee. Eevee then flashes and evolves into Vaporeon. Eevee is now Vaporeon for the rest of the match. If Electric is selected, Rival tosses a Thunder Stone to Eevee. Eevee then flashes and evolves into Jolteon. Eevee is now Jolteon for the rest of the match. If Fire is selected, Rival tosses a Fire Stone to Eevee. Eevee then flashes and evolves into Flareon. Eevee is now Flareon for the rest of the match. After the Evolution, the match continues on like normal. If a CPU does this Final Smash, it does one at random instead of selecting one.
b. Eevee (If Colorless was selected): Trump Card: Eevee runs forward. If it makes contact with an opponent, it then freezes the opponent in place, and creates a slash mark where they are. The damage and knockback is determined by how much damage Eevee has (the more damage it has, the greater the damage and knockback, highest being a 1-Hit KO like Marth’s Critical Hit.).
c. Vaporeon: Muddy Water: Vaporeon creates a tidal wave of dirty water and sends it forward.
d. Jolteon: Discharge: Jolteon creates a large field of electric shocks that work like Zapdos' attack in Melee and Raikou's attack in Melee combined. Jolteon stands in place while this happens.
e. Flareon: Lava Plume: Flareon shoots a fireball into the sky. After it reaches a set distance, the fireball explodes into a rain of fire, during which time Flareon is now controllable and able to attack the opponents as well.
Taunt:
a. Rival: Shrugs while shaking his head with a smirk. This is a “Don’t bother trying to beat me, you’ll just embarrass yourself.” look. He does this taunt no matter what form his Eevee is in.
b. Eevee: Looks at the camera with cute eyes as it wags its tail.
c. Vaporeon: Melts into a puddle, waits a second, then reforms.
d. Jolteon: Hunches the front part of its body down like a dog ready to strike. Jolteon growls as electricity flows through its spiked fur.
e. Flareon: Shakes itself like a wet dog drying itself, as steam pours out of it’s fur.
Now, some of you may ask: What if Final Smashes are turned off? Is Eevee just an Eevee?
The way it should work is this: If, and ONLY IF Final Smashes are turned off, you can select the Eevee forms like Samus and Zero Suit Samus. If they are turned on, you cannot select them that way.
(Holy crap this post turned out to be massive)
(Oh yeah and 4nace has been contacted to see if we can use his Vaporeon moveset)
So what do you guys think?
