I suggest that Diddy Kong be teamed up with Dixie Kong, and they can change via Down Special.
This was Sakurai’s original plan for Diddy Kong in Brawl, but coding issues made him eventually just have Diddy by himself.
In the past when Diddy kong was the main hero (and not Donkey Kong), Diddy was assisted by Dixie Kong as his partner. It’d help represent Diddy’s games moreso than just Diddy himself. (and when I mean Diddy is the main hero, I’m talking about games like DKC2: Diddy Kong’s Quest).
Also, Dixie has appeared in her own games, where she had to save Diddy and DK, so she is pretty important to the series.
In the next Smash, if DK were to get a new rep, it’d probably be K. Rool. However, seeing as K. Rool is on the roster (Crusade), the next best choice would most likely be Dixie.
It’d also cater to the fans who want Dixie in as a playable character, and we all know that catering to fans = PROFIT!
Also, she wouldn’t **** up the roster because technically she would take up no roster space, as she would be paired with Diddy. It’d help DK get more representation and not screw over the roster. Seems good to me.
Would she get in the way of Diddy Kong? I don’t think so. iirc you guys aren’t going to include tripping, right? So obviously Diddy’s down special can’t be the same from Brawl (banana peels), so you’re gonna have to replace it with something... why not Dixie Kong? :3
And of course I wouldn't be so rude as to suggest it and leave it at that, so if spriting becomes an issue... I'll sprite Dixie in the same style as Diddy. Heck, I'll sprite both Diddy and Dixie if you want me to.

Orange bombs? Never heard of 'em... need to actually play DK64 sometime.
Edit: Diddy already reps DK64 pretty well, as he has the peanut popgun and the jetpack. Dixie's games have yet to be represented... but do whatever you want, I guess...

In the games, Link actually carries his bombs around to attack, which is why they have it like that. In DK64, when you press the button to throw it, you throw it immediately, not holding it in your hands. Alternatively, if you choose to make it bounce and go in an arc, it could be a mix between a yellow Pikmin throw, Mario's fireball, and an explosion. Sure, that's unique. |

Honestly, I don't have much against Dixie, but if she were to be in, why take away from Diddy? She could be the main one you play as and Kiddy Kong could follow around.
Or we just just have Funky Kong...

The only thing you're "Taking Away" is the Down Special. If you're so hell bent on keeping whatever it was, then implement it over something else. Dixie and Kiddie could work, and don't even get me started on Funky Kong. |

Heck, you could even make the orange bombs a side special, since IIRC Diddy never does his side special in the games. Roster Balance. And that'd be copying TSR's Smash. Dixie Kong is best for the next rep. THEN Funky. |

So, Dixie would take away from Diddy, but adding having six characters on one team (Pokémon Trainer) is okay? Plus, no one has any real complaints about Zelda switching with Sheik, why would Diddy by different? |

IMO DK should get more... I mean, iirc it is Nintendo's 4th biggest series, with the LoZ, Pokémon, and Mario being above it. And yet, StarFox is getting better representation. Oh well...
Edit: Dixie technically wouldn't be "another character," but rather part of Diddy Kong, thus technically increasing DK's representation without "including another character."

So ya won't bother to make another rep to please fans, add more to the roster, and you wouldn't even have to sprite her?
And mind you, Donkey Kong is Nintendo's 4th largest series. That's right. Larger than Kirby, Starfox, Metroid, etc. It should at least have more than Fire Emblem with 3.5.

wow, i see i am the only one who voted against it.
I dont really like the idea of pairing the 2 together since I feel that they are completely different individuals. Also, I like Diddy Kong on his own and the way he is in Brawl, I would hate to see that change.
But, I am not fully against the idea. Depends on how they will share the same roster slot.
If they were to switch similar to Zelda/Sheik & PKMN Trainer, then that seems ok since it gives Dixie a spot on the roster without taking anyone else spot and Diddy stays the same.
What I am fully against is having them pair up as a duo similar to the Ice Climbers. I see no purpose of it since both characters are capable of fighting on their own. And also, it does not benefit Diddy Kong at all. Why should Diddy Kong lose his original move set just to get Dixie in? I feel that it not right. Why fix what is not broken. (PKMN Trainer for example)
I understand that they were originally planned to be a duo in Brawl, but in the end it never came down to it and Diddy actually worked out just fine in the end.
Overall, I will only support this idea of they can switch (Press Down B to switch). You hit down b and Diddy will pull a barrel over himself. The barrel then breaks open and reveal Dixie. You can go back and forth on this between characters.
@dmx's comment on amount of PKMN the trainer holds.
Actually it is never necessary to carry 6 Pokemon at all times. Its only optional.
