There are still people in the american pokemon world that don't know what pikachu's name comes from. People know where charizard's name comes from though.
Sure, simply romanizing would be great, but the names would be harder to remember. Heck, the names were hard to remember before the english ones were released. I still sometimes have trouble when I'm battling and I get the option to switch out.
