This has no addition to the discussion, but can I just point out that no one I have ever asked likes Pikachu? Everyone has a favorite over him, and you know why?
I HERD YU LIEK MUDKIPZ.

That's because there's 648 others to choose from. Pikachu is the mascot, whether or not he's the fan favorite. Mario is the mascot of Nintendo, but I have a number of friends who prefer the Pokemon series over the Mario series, myself included, and I would imagine there are many more people out there like me.

Probably a bit late to the argument, but: I would like to call it a discussion, argument is such an ugly word ;DBut if Pikachu has appeared in the Pokemon series as much as Meowth, then Meowth has every right to be playable as much as Pikachu. You can't really compare Pikachu to Meowth though. Pikachu is the mascot of the Pokemon series, and he was not put into the original smash bros to represent the Pokemon anime. You guys are stating that Meowth should be put in because of his anime status, but that should not be the case because he's a video game character. And you can argue that Jigglypuff was put in the original game because of her anime status, but that doesn't change the fact that she's been in all three smash bros games while Meowth continually shows up as a PokeBall, even though she hasn't shown up (and has been replaced by multiple characters such as Sandile) in the anime in a long time. Honestly, I think she gets in every time on veteran status and as the "glass cannon" of the Smash Brothers series. All the Pokemon are video game characters, but it was the anime series that made the Pokemon franchise the pop culture icon it is today. The video game series would not be as popular if it wasnt for the anime series, which played a big part in its success. I think anime status when it comes down to discussing Pokemon should matter cause Pokemon is far more than just a video game series, its a huge enterprise that has reached out to many types of marketing possible like TV, movies, games, toys, trading cards, etc.
Ok, so we cant really compare Meowth with Pikachu on an equal level due to Pikachu being the mascot, but we can all agree that Meowth is up there after Pikachu when you look at main Pokemon characters. He is a major Pokemon. Even Sakurai agrees that he is a major Pokemon (read Dojo)Yea, Jigglypuff has been in all Smash Bros games and no point of removing her at all, which is something none of us think should happen. And yea, Meowth has been a pokeball character, but he was planned playable from the original Smash Bros game, yet he was replaced with Jigglypuff to appeal to the japanese fans since Jigglypuff was the mascot of the Pokemon series over there at the time. Not only this, Pikachu has appeared more than Meowth in the Pokemon series, almost by an exponential factor. Do you not remember that up until 5th gen, Pikachu was in every single regional pokedex, whereas Meowth was only in the regional dex for Kanto and Johto dexes? This is like comparing apples to oranges. Pikachu is the mascot so ofcourse he will be in every Pokedex. His recurring appearances in the game series is one advantage over Meowth. But remember, that the anime series does count as well when you come down to deciding on reps, and Meowth the 2nd Major rep in the anime. Also, this has been bugging me for a while: Pokemon is the single and plural form of the general term, as is the case with every individual Pokemon. "Pokemons" is grammatically incorrect. I still dont understand why they never use "S" in the name. It bothers me for some reason.I also want to clarify one last thing: I'm not against Meowth at all, I'm just pointing out that the logic you're using for reasons that he should be in is rather flawed. I mean, This is entirely incorrect, as I stated above. If anything, it would be the other way around, and then it would still be incorrect when talking about the video game series as a whole as opposed to the anime series. Ok, maybe I might be off on that quote, but Meowth is still a character that really should be in a Smash game.My answers are underlined

They don't use the "s" in the plural form because it's a direct romanization and abbreviation of the japanese term. Poketto Monsutasu -> Pocket Monsters -> Pokemon. Technically, the S is already included, but just abbreviated. Also, the abbreviated japanese term is "Pokemon" as well, and the rules for plurals are very different in Japanese. It would just be simpler to keep the singular names the same as the plural. We'd have "Bulbasauri", "Seadrae", "Laprases"... they just don't sound good. In the anime, the characters say "Look at all the Wingull" or "The Butterfree are all gathering for mating rituals".
But now we can get back on topic.

On-Topic: Another reason that supports Meowth is that he was planned for the original Smash, and all characters that were planned for that game have been playable already aside from Meowth. Melee added Peach, Bowser, and Mewtwo. Brawl added Pit and King Dedede. Now Meowth is the only one left.

I don't see a reason for him to NOT be in.

There are rumors of it being announced at E3, IIRC.

Announced at E3, released next year. Project Cafe (actual name not confirmed yet)
(Before anyone asks, all systems went under a project name before the final name. Wii was Project Revolution, Gamecube was Project Dolphin, etc.)

Isn't it a bit too early for Nintendo to release a new console?
In my opinion, the wii hasn't been exploited in the least bit, especially regrarding other consoles, such as PS3.
