WARNING: LONG READ AHEAD
I have been pushing Mike Haggar for months now, while nothing seems to have broken. It is time to step it up a notch and show WHY he should be in Crusade over Morrigan Aensland.
Reason No. 1: Nintendo relevance.
Let's take a look at Morrigan's Nintendo resume, shall we?
Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO-Gamecube
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Both versions)-Wii
SVC: Card Fighters DS-DS
I've seen people claim that there is a Darkstalkers compilation game that's for the Wii, but Japan only, but I have yet to see this. The only compilation I've seen that is Japan only is PS2 exclusive.
I would LOVE to have proof otherwise.
But the point is, none of her actual games have been on a Nintendo system (unless proven wrong). She's only been in Capcom crossovers, which is not deserving enough, as it means someone like Kajin no Soki has the same chance.
Now, take a look at Haggar's resume.
Mighty Final Fight-NES (Chibi-styled remake of Final Fight)
Final Fight-SNES (A port of the arcade classic, however, missing Guy)
Final Fight Guy-SNES (A new version of the above game that features Guy instead of Cody. NOTE: Haggar is in both.)
Final Fight 2-SNES (SNES Exclusive sequel)
Final Fight 3-SNES (SNES Exclusive sequel)
Final Fight One-GBA (Another remake of the original game, however, it has both Guy AND Cody, AS WELL as unlockable versions of the two in their Street Fighter forms.)
Saturday Night SlamMasters-SNES (Not a Final Fight title, but Haggar is included here as a playable character in the series, but only one game made it to a Nintendo system. It either takes place before Haggar is mayor of Metro City (JP) or after he steps down. (US))
SVC: Card Fighters DS-DS
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition-3DS (Now, he didn't appear himself as a playable character, but he has had numerous cameos.)
Much more filled out, if I do say so myself.
Reason No. 2: Popularity.
Whether it's within Capcom, or outside of it, Haggar is FAR from obscure.
Within Capcom, Haggar's been in a lot of games outside his series. However, this does not give him a one-up over Morrigan, as she has the same deal. And she's probably been in more games total. However, most of them were not on Nintendo systems. Not even her own series.
Outside of Capcom, he's got as much popularity as Chuck Norris, but without the hate that Chuck's popularity also stems. He's even got the same exact meme as Chuck. (Being otherworldly powerful when he really isn't.)
Now, to quote Wikipedia on his page:
"Noted as the star of the Final Fight series,[5] Haggar has been described as both iconic and one of the most unforgettable characters in gaming history.[6][7][8] Haggar was named by Gamest magazine the best video game character of 1990, placing first in their top fifty characters list and appearing on the issue's cover,[9] and later named the forty-fifth best character of 1993.[9] In 2006, he was cited by Retro Gamer as one of the heroes of classic video gaming.[10] In August 2009, GamesTM featured him in their "Hall of Fame", describing his character background as "wonderfully layered", with his aspects of being a father, a hard-working mayor, and former wrestler giving him "a sense of humanity" and "instantly memorable". They went on to state that without the character, the Final Fight series would not be as notable, calling Haggar "integral to its charm".[11] Nintendo Power listed Mike Haggar as having one of the best mustaches.[12]
Haggar has been called one of the best and most enjoyable characters to use in the Final Fight series by reviewers of the titles,[13][14] and GamesRadar described him as "arguably the most beloved character to come out of the Final Fight series", expressing their wishes to see him appear in Super Street Fighter IV.[15] He ranked third in Electronic Gaming Monthly’s list of the top ten video game politicians, in which he was compared directly to former Minnesota governor and wrestler Jesse Ventura.[16] In another article, they praised the character's behavior and actions in Final Fight, citing him as their favorite aspect of Capcom Classics Collection and stating "You'd have to be a damn communist not to vote for this guy".[17] IGN listed him as a character they hoped to see as an unlockable character in home ports of Street Fighter IV, noting his fighting style as "a perfect fit" for the title;[18] they later named him one of their favorite wrestlers in video games.[19] Gamespy named him one of the "25 Extremely Rough Brawlers" in video gaming, praising the brutality of his fighting style.[20] GameDaily named Haggar one of their favorite Capcom characters of all time, placing him 18th on their "Top 25" list,[21] and later named him one of their favorite heavily muscled characters in video games.[22]"
If that isn't enough, his very being spawned videos like THESE:
Those vids are from commercials for Final Fight: Double Impact, which is a two-game pack for the original Final Fight and Magic Sword. This wasn't released on a Nintendo system, but these commercials represents Haggar's popularity.
And these two were made just recently.
And to top it off, he appears (as Mayor Hagar) in the webseries Weebl and Bob.
AND, he was featured in a ScrewAttack Death Battle against Zangief. Although he lost, it still shows his popularity.
Reason No. 3: Uniqueness
I know what you're thinking; Haggar, UNIQUE? He's just a muscle man!
However, in terms of playstyle, he'd be VERY unique, as he is a bruiser and grappler, which is not featured in Smash thus far.
And DMX and Phantom said he had no moveset potential, however, I am making a moveset for him as you are reading this. However, being that I recently made one for Gold Trainer's three Pokemon, I'm taking my time on this. However, I have the specials all ready.
Neutral Special: Pipe Smash-This does one of two things. If you merely press the Special button, he smashs the pipe to the ground, let's go of it, and the pipe bounces upward. The slam does good damage and knockback, while the bouncing pipe does minimal in both.
If the button is held, he tosses the pipe like a boomerang, except, it doesn't come back. This can keep hitting the opponent as the opponent is flung back. (Keyword being CAN, not WILL.)
Side Special: Rapid Fire Fist-Haggar rapidly punches and keeps punching the longer the button is held. (This is based off one of his Hyper Combos in MvC3, however, it's not as strong and doesn't finish with a Violent Axe.)
Up Special: Rising Mike-Haggar flys upward with a knee smash, but if he makes contact with an opponent, he will try to grab them. If he succeeds, he will perform a Spinning Piledriver. If done where there is no ground, this causes Haggarcide. If he fails to grab the opponent, he enters helpless state.
Down Special: Double Lariat-Haggar spins in place, with both fists extended outward. Haggar has complete flinch resistance AND damage resistance in this state. However, he takes 15% damage everytime he uses this. This move is best used as a last resort counter, as this move has NO KO potential.
Final Smashes (yes, Haggar has two like Chun-Li):
a. Flying Haggar Press-Haggar leaps into the air and comes down in an explosive body press.
b. Atomic Piledriver-Haggar goes to grab an opponent. If he grabs one, he starts with a suplex, then spins the opponent, tosses them upward, leaps up, flips them around, grabs them, then uses a stronger Spinning Piledriver on them.
I will post the finished moveset on a later time, but still. I hope this will help people see the light about Haggar.
