GameFaqs has a topic where people have been going to Japanese game boards to see what THEY think for characters for the upcoming Smash Bros.
Now, you may ask, why is this important in any way? Japan ultimately is the source of character popularity and choices for Smash due to being made in Japan.
Some things may shock you.

Now, the first thing they want, is that all the Brawl veterans stay, which differs from American fans, who want characters like Toon Link and R.O.B. out.
Second thing is, they heavily want Mewtwo and Roy to return. They want them to return more than ANY possible Newcomer.
I will list the rest by series:
1. Mario: No real requests, but they do expect new Mario characters. They seem to have no preference on who they are.
2. Donkey Kong: They REALLY want K. Rool. He's pretty much the main Newcomer they want. Dixie is also mentioned a bit.
3. Zelda: Like with Mario, no real requests.
4. Metroid: They want more characters in general, but Ridley is the name on many lips, although like us, often argue about his size.
5. Very few mention Krystal, but it's usually on the basis that Smash needs more females. Other than that, not much is said about her.
6. Pokemon: Aside from Mewtwo returning and Lucario staying, they want Zoroark. Moreso than Vicitni. A LOT moreso.
7. F-Zero: They want more characters in general, but Black Shadow is the name on many lips, due to them wanting him to take Ganon's old moveset and give Ganon a new one.
8. Mother: They want Claus.
9. Fire Emblem: Aside from Roy, there is some little mention of Sheeda (Caeda), but for the same reason as Krystal. "Smash needs more females". Given that Sakurai doesn't add characters soley on gender, Krystal and Sheeda are very unlikely.
10. Kid Icarus: No one was really talking about new characters. But with Mario, Zelda, and KI, they feel that there will definitely be new characters.
11. Newcoming 1st and 2nd Party series: Shulk (Xenoblade) and Miis came up regularly as well did the idea of a Sin and Punishment character. Takamaru also got decent amount of mentions. Very little mention of Golden Sun characters, Starfy, and Little Mac. (Leading me to believe that those series won't get characters.) Characters from Last Story and Zangeki no Reginleiv were also mentioned.
12. Newcoming 3rd Party series: The big three were Mega Man, Slime/a FF character, and Professor Layton. Many others were mentioned, but these gained the most discussion.
13. Other: Apparently a lot of anime character and Sentai character suggestions, as well as a lot of mentions of Godzilla. You heard me: Godzilla. None of these characters have a shot, but it makes you wonder...what IF Godzilla was in Smash Bros.?
