Meowth should be in before any pokemon period. Rival Trainer is such a terrible choice of a character. Has no originality since we already have the Pokemon Trainer, and Meowth is the 2nd most recurring character in the series. Picking Rival Trainer over Meowth is like picking the Kooplings (Bowser Kids) over Luigi, Peach, Toad, & Bowser

Meowth was the second most recurring character in the ANIME. We're looking at video games. And we chose some of the most popular Pokemon of the first 3 generations. Who wouldn't play as Gengar, Scizor, or Aggron?

If you weren't looking at Anime, just the games, then Pikachu is no different from all the others.

Except that Pikachu has appeared in each and every game's regional pokedex up until 5th gen when they decided it would only have new pokemon.
And really, if you ask any Pokemon fan what the mascot of the entire Pokemon series is, they'll say Pikachu.

And to further the argument, Jigglypuff got in due to anime popularity, and even though it doesn't appear anymore, it is still in Smash. Jigglypuff isn't as popular as it used to be. Also, Meowth IS one of the most popular and well known. And Lucario and Zoroark? They got in to their respective Smashes (Brawl and Crusade) because of their movie statuses. Your argument is invalid. Just to clear things up: I never told DMX that the character roster was finalized; in fact, I told him that it wasn't 100% complete only minutes before he made the announcement. What you see in the posted roster is not, by any means, guaranteed to be the "final" character roster. As we are only midway through development, changes to the roster are always possible. Sorry everyone for all the mess.
