He represents all of the anime.
ALL OF IT.

well, the importance of that depends on whether we're rating representation by anime or games.

Meowth didn't originate in the anime, he became famous in the anime. Much like Pikachu. At first, it was just a rare electric type in Viridian. Then the anime came along and Pikachu became the mascot of Pokemon. Going by your logic, Pikachu is already representing the anime.

Care to elaborate? Rival represents 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation. Meowth represents 1st and a bit of the anime. The Rival himself, Gary/Blue only represents 1st and 2nd Gen, as well as the remakes of said games. Despite this, it only counts as a rep to the 3rd Gen if he appeared in R/S/E, and same with 4th if in D/P/Pt. The Pokemon themselves, however is an issue. Sure, they represent 2nd (Scizor) and 3rd (Aggron), but Gary/Blue NEVER OWNED THEM. Whereas Red, the Trainer in Brawl, has a Charizard, and Pokemon that are evolved from the Squirtle (Blastoise) and Ivysaur (Venusaur), he can get all three in Yellow. Blue never had Gastly/Haunter/Gengar, Scyther/Scizor, or Aron/Larion/Aggron. It seems to me, that the three were random Pokemon thrown out a hat or by PERSONAL CHOICE. To properly represent Gary/Blue, he would need Pokemon that he's actually HAD, like Raticate (who's famous in various Pokemon creepypastas), Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, Rhydon (who is special in the fact that it's one of the first Pokemon conceived)/Rhyperior, Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar, Arcanine, Exeggutor, Eevee/Flareon/Jolteon/Vaporeon, Heracross, etc.

Rhydon is THE first Pokemon.
But I think that other than what was in Brawl and Mewtwo, we should stop with Deoxys.

Look, I want to apologize for all the flaming that went on. That was clearly out of line and very inappropriate. And the flamer knows who he is. I also want to say that we ARE open to suggestions for characters, still. Believe it or not, there are quite a few characters on that list I would not feel comfortable having in the game. Proto Man: Eh. He's not Zero. That's my problem. Zero is a lot more popular and has cool weapons. Sure, Zero doesn't fight with a shield, which is unique for Proto Man, but hey, Zero has lots of moveset potential anyway. Rival Trainer: I've never mentioned this before to anyone, but Rival Trainer just feels... indulgent to me. We already have so many Pokemon reps, and let's face it - do we as developers really want to put 3 times the work into a character spot that could easily be filled by another franchise that isn't represented, such as Nights. Or, we could just have Meowth. Honestly, what could be more hilarious? Oh, wait, Weegee. Skull Kid: This spot was originally taken by Zant, and another spot by Wolf Link/Midna. That would have been fine by me. However, the roster evolved, and then it was just Zant, then a placeholder spot for a Zelda rep. As far as moveset potential goes, Skull Kid's decent (because of the mask), but I think Midna has more possibilities. Moreover, she's more recent, and more likable as a character. Midna FTW! Aero: This sort of goes without saying... But I can't really think of a substitute character off the top of my head other than Nights or Klonoa. Even then, I'm afraid neither of those characters are mainstream enough... Starfy: Eh, ... Okay. Fine. Starfy is cool. Characters I think are cool: Paper Mario: Seriously, he's NOT a clone! ;D I have the sprites. And they are quite nice. He'll be nothing like Mario, so let's get that point out of the way. Also, Paper Mario to me deserves some of its own representation. There's no denying that all three Paper Mario games had a huge impact on Nintendo fans everywhere. If nothing else, Paper Mario at least deserves its own representative. Dark Samus: Just too epic to resist, really. Samus vs. Dark Samus in Smash? I'm there! And, I think Dark Samus will be a lot of fun to play as, with different moves and personality than your usual Samus. Eh, I am not commenting on Morrigan... Okay, fine. She's one of the most recognizable video game characters, for whatever reason THAT may be.. <cough>, but yeah. Vampire Savior was a game I played at some random arcade a few times as a kid, and it just was so much fun. Only a few years back did I learn about the characters and the Darkstalkers series, and I realized that the game was really kind of a hidden gem. Sure, among fighting game fans, Morrigan and the Darkstalkers games were well-known, but otherwise, not so much. Sure, she was in Marvel, CVS, TVC, and the like, but a lot of players don't even know about those games! So, if nothing else, I think she deserves some attention. (No joke.) Besides, did you ever expect a succubus to be playable in Smash?

DUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUHDUH FALCOOOOOOOON 1st: Dr. Wily would definitely be the most unique, but Zero's the best choice. 2nd: YES 3rd: Wolf Link and Midna are probably the best choice, yet I still like Zant 4th: I actually think NiGHTS the second most well known sega rep, because of having a playable thing in Sonic Riders, possible Sega and Sonic super stars racing, a chao of NiGHTS, and is pretty well known I think. Aero's fun, but yea, too little popularity 5th: I was going to make an expansion a while back, but was too lazy. 6th: I agree, but I feel there could be a better representative. Petey(too be a long with Rosa) 7th: I absolutely love Dark Samus, but Sylux would be better IMO 8th: By kid, how old are you? Like my age, or something like 9? Couse if 9, 0_o I still dont' think its too appropriate though
Seriously, though, Falcon, you should have a bigger vote on character roster.

Falcon, I definitely agree with on Zero. Zero actually does have a lot cooler of a shield than Protoman though but that's not the point. Zero does have a lot more potential as a character than protoman though because he does have all those other weapons and ex skills and the fact that he's just plain BA. Also Generic, Wily would be a very unique character I would imagine and an enjoyable one. I just like Zero too much.
Also, Klonoa is probably one of my top 5 favorite series. I don't think the guy would fit in smash though because as you said he really isn't as well known as a Namco rep compared to others.

@falcon's opinions:
Protoman: Agreed. 100%. Zero before anyone else from Megaman. Rival Trainer: Agreed. Meowth should be in. Skull Kid: Personally...I'd take Tingle before ANY OTHER new Zelda character. He's appeared in numerous Zelda titles, and even has titles of his own. Aero: I'd say NiGHTS, so that Sega has another non-Sonic character, but Aero does represent a new, often overlooked company. Like Ristar, he's a character no one would expect that's from old times. So I'd take Aero. Starfy: Eh. Not my favorite, but I don't dislike him. He's fine. Paper Mario: I prefer Doc, but you do have a point in him being unique. I personally don't want him in Smash, but in Crusade, sure. Maybe it'd change my mind on him being in Smash. Dark Samus: I'm not that big on evil clones. I don't want Dark Samus, but since Ridley's already confirmed, I'll suck it up and take her/him/it/whatever. I'd rather have Sylux or Anthony. Morrigan: Like I said before, I'm fine with her, but she's a little too...."revealing" for this type of game. I mean, the highest in sexual appeal in Smash is Zero Suit Samus. Morrigan and her near toplessness would be a drastic difference.

Protoman:NOU! No thanks,i still prefer Zero. Rival Trainer:Hmm.. I personnaly like the idea.Imagine PKMN Triainer vs.Rival Trainer. But we have to much PKMN Reps. Skull Kid:As a Zelda fan i LOVE Skull Kid.But i thin kstill Zant is a better chooise. Aero:Never Heard of him.I don't like NIGHT's but i still think ?NIGHTS is a better chooies. Starfy:Eh?Why not.I don't mind him. Paper Mario:Yes!!!!I love Paper Mario! Here WE GO! SHeet: www.spriters-resource.com/custom_edited/mario/sheet/23242Dark Samus:If recolouring-Yes,if not-Yes.I want dark samus! Morrigan:Eh,why not.But as Golden Says...

I really like the voiced opinions over here. I may not agree with all, but they are well-reasoned.
Protoman: Obviously zero is a better choice, moving on. Rival Trainer: As much as the arguements against his inclusion are logical I still want him in. There just are so many pokemon that people would love to play as but haven't got the chance and Rival Trainer shines for this very reason. Sure, we adore the starters but wouldn't want to play with pokemon like Scizor e.c.t? Maybe he could the "reicarnation" of most existing rivals (3 first gens). Skull Kid: This one is not an easy choice. Sure, Midna may be more popular and stuff but Skull Kid represents one the most memorable villains in videogame history, Majora's Mask! Additionally, I would also love to see Zant who can perform all sorts of peculiar magic as well as grow swords e.c.t.
The rest later.

Whats with everybody calling Dark Samus a clone and a recolor? Its so much more than that. Unfortunately, I think the only real way to incorporate it in is by overpowering it...
If DS was in, I'd certainly at least secondary it.

that paper mario sheet is quite beautiful. I can't believe I've never seen it before but I'm an instant fan. I know right? ;D It's quite amazing. If we could put Paper Mario in the game right now, we would. However, he's going to have to wait. I am glad you guys are voicing your opinions. In response to Golden's comments on Morrigan, I would say that the sexual appeal is honestly 95% irrelevant to my perspective on including her. I just like the general design and character she is, not to mention her ability to transform parts of her body to use as weapons, her ability to fly, and her special moves. Her moveset could end up being very fitting for Smash.

She'd be really good for Smash, She just may need to be toned down a bit.

El Maiz is right. Also "toning down" Morrigan would go against her character...
