Ha. Ash's lack of common sense and knowledge was funny enough. And at this point, it's just getting old. You guys keep forgetting that Meowth can't represent the anime because he originated in Red and Green nearly 4 years before the anime aired.
I'd want: Zoroark Deoxys 6 Pokemon Trainer
Ancient Minister

I don't see why Meowth isn't all of those.
Because Rival trainer using pokemon he didn't have in the game they liked him in is SUCH good representation.

Uh.....do you guys have ANY idea of how POPULAR is Deoxys? I know Pokemon and a lot and there is no way Meowth's popularity surpasses Deoxys'.
Deoxys over Meowth anyday. Deoxys FTW!

Deoxys is more liked than Meowth, I believe, but is not as well-known as Meowth due to not being 1st gen.

Destiny Deoxys, his first appearance, EVERYBODY who liked Pokemon liked Deoxys the INSTANT the movie came out, even critics. Meowth appeared in a couple of episodes of the first generation later. Deoxys first came out in ONE movie and everyone who liked pokemon began making a Deoxys fan club.

ZS please.
And i know Meowth appeared in ALMOST every episode, but not in the very first. Doexys very first is his appearance in a movie, not in an episode of the anime, and he gained worldwide popularity by just the movie.

You implied that his popularity came mostly from the movie. Yeah no.

Like how Genesect's popularity is rising (and Arceus before it), Deoxys' popularity stemmed from being the last Pokemon of the time. THEN came the movie.

Im sorry, but I have to say no to Deoxys. He is popular for the wrong reasons in my opinion. I will explain why. Have you noticed that ever since Mewtwo's appearance in the 1st gen, almost every generation after the 1st one always had a legendary/villain pokemon that has taken Mewtwo's position? And Deoxys is one of those replacements in that position. His appearance and possibly fighting style may stand out as unique, but other than him being a 3rd gen rep, his representation doesnt stand out to well cause just like a number of legendary Pokemon before and after him, he is nothing more than a placeholder for the next gen legendary/villain pokemon.
Meowth in the other hand is one of the most well-known Pokemon that appeals to both hardcore and casual pokemon fans. And one of the 2 most recurring Pokemon in the anime. And no one can say that the anime is not important or doesnt count because the anime help boost the popularity in a very big way for the series into the mainstream audience.

2nd Gen: Who is the villain here? 3rd Gen: Deoxys isn't really a villain. Neither is Rayquaza. 4th Gen: Darkrai causes nightmares, but it exiles itself away from others. 5th Gen: We don't know enough about Genesect to determine this as true. Zoroark is the next choice for "villain", but even then, Zoroark isn't a villain.
I think you're generalizing Deoxys. He/It is liked for it's unique ability to switch to different forms to deal with a situation. Not only that, but it's one of the only Legendaries with the right body type for Smash. Genesect would be another, but again, we don't know enough about it. Vicitni is also another Legendary that can fit.

Meowth in the other hand is one of the most well-known Pokemon that appeals to both hardcore and casual pokemon fans. Since when was Meowth used in competitive play? Never. Maybe in an UU or NU tourney. Probably not even then. Persian is even a stretch to say it's used competitively.

Maybe not just villain, but just being the legendary pokemon role in a way similar to Mewtwo. I just question Deoxys role in the series as a whole.
@detta, im speaking as in the Pokemon series as a whole and not just in one area of it.

Once again, where in second Gen. is there a Legendary like Mewtwo? Lugia is another league. (20,000 of them under the sea! Bad joke...) And Celebi is more like Mew than Mewtwo.

That's true. I just think in my opinion that he doesnt stand out as anything very special. He was a legendary Pokemon in one generation and that is about it the way I see it. And we dont really see him as much anymore.
Disappoints me that Meowth is being overlooked with the likes of Deoxys, Darkrai, & Rival Trainer, which were all active during one period of time while Meowth has been more recurring. And I think those 3 choices only appeal to the hardcore fans rather than the casual ones, while Meowth appeals to both

@previous SK201 post: You said he appeals to both hardcore and casual Pokemon fans. I was saying only the latter was true because Meowth is completely useless in competitive play, where the hardcore fans are. Disappoints me that Meowth is being overlooked with the likes of Deoxys, Darkrai, & Rival Trainer, which were all active during one period of time while Meowth has been more recurring. And I think those 3 choices only appeal to the hardcore fans rather than the casual ones, while Meowth appeals to both Deoxys: Like has been said before, legendary, one of very few pokemon to be able to change forms and alter stats (Meloetta now shares this trait through the move Relic Song), unique, blah blah blah. Darkrai: Appeals to hardcore because, you know, he's Darkrai. Powerful, fast, Uber-tier, the 10th movie event version gave it Spacial Rend to deal with dragon types. Appeals to casual because, you know, he's Darkrai. Epic, cool-looking, 10th movie gave it a pseudo-villain role that changed to the self-sacrificing hero. Rival: Meowth definitely isn't being overlooked by the likes of Rival Trainer, it's just that DMX (and apparently Phantom?) like the idea of Blue better than Meowth. Personally I'd rather not have either and have either G/S Trainer, Cynthia, or the minister Darkrai. Also, Meowth has only been recurring in the anime, which we have to ignore for now because we're basing this all mostly off of the games that they originated from, and Meowth didn't show up in a number of games.
