Ok, so maybe he is not the best choice when it comes down to competitive play, depending on the way the player trains him. But at the same time, Pikachu & Jigglypuff aren't a competitive player's favorite choice in battle either. Yet those 2 are in Smash Bros. What I meant to point out when I labeled Meowth being in favor the both audience is that even the hardcore fans would agree that he is worth putting in and has a reason to be playable in a real Smash Bros game. Bet they wont complain either if it were to happen. Which I think is most-likely.
Ok, so Deoxys can change forms and somewhat, but so can Ditto (the originator of this ability), Zoroark, and possibly some other Pokemon. Let's not forget that there are other Pokemon that can do different abilities that some or none other have.
Darkrai may be pointless to put in since Lucario already has the 4th gen covered. Also, having Mewtwo, Lucario, Deoxys, & Darkrai is really not being so unique if you think about it. They mostly seem to use Shadow, Ghost, Phychic, Dark, etc type of moves. They all end up having a ball of energy as projectiles, teleporting/disappearing, etc. Sure you can change it up to make them different, but their styles seems to be similar in its own ways.
As for the Trainer, nothing I can do to get rid of him/her, but I just feel that having another Trainer is not bringing in nothing unique or having any originality no matter what Pokemon they are using.
So Meowth missed out on some games, yet he has appeared in more games than any of the number of Pokemon mentioned above. And I dont think the anime should be ignored, cause again, the anime is what made the Pokemon series the pop culture success it has become today, and Meowth was a major character in that anime series.

Just how many Pokémon reps do we even need?

Maiz, consider the fact that Pokemon is Nintendo's second largest series, only overshadowed by Mario. We have how many Mario reps? @smashking:
The issue with this statement is that there are also a lot of Pokemon that can do what Meowth does. Skitty for example. Skitty is also a cat-based Pokemon that learns similar moves. There's also Purrloin, a dark-type cat pokemon from 5th gen. It's best not to use points that can be used against yourself.
I could make a moveset for Darkrai that's entirely different from Lucario and Mewtwo. Easily. Not to mention that Darkrai would move much faster than Lucario and Zoroark, could easily be more floaty (but not as much as Mewtwo), things like that. Yes, the fact that we already have Lucario as the 4th gen rep is what defeats the purpose though.
Multiple devs have stated we can't base things off the anime because we're representing the games. Yes, the anime helped make Pokemon popular, but Red isn't Ash. And the reason Cynthia was brought up as another option for a Pokemon Trainer is because she's been in the 7 most recent games, which is more than any other specific trainer besides Red.

Darkrai over Deoxys?

According to DMX, yes. My guess is just due to uniqueness, though, because Darkrai is just the same type as Zoroark and from the same gen as Lucario. Deoxys, on the other hand, is unique as well(despite being the same type as Mewtwo, which lowers the possibility of being in as well), but is part of third generation, a generation that still needs to be represented.

Needs more Meowth. That's it.
And possibly Missingno. as a WTF character.

Can you remind me again why pokeballs aren't sufficient to represent generations, like they've done in the other smash games?

Rival Trainer and Deoxys seem pretty cool, but I'm caught between Mewoth and Zorark at this point. Zorark can shapeshift, which I don't like much, but everything else about him seems cool. Meowth bores me in design, but it would make the most sense.
Um, I'm confused.
...Ah.

Here's what should make up your mind: Zoroark's already being planned. That leaves Meowth. Go with Meowth.

Meh. I'd rather have Blue. As long as he has the correct Pogeymen.

Although they are very similar, Meowth makes more sense, and I think that Meowth would have more fans than Mewoth. However Mewoth is cuter than Mewoth.

Who is Deoxys? (Flys upwards, and stays there 24/7 to rot).

Deoxys is a legendary pokemon from the 3rd gen. Since we have 2 legendary pokemon(mewtwo & zoroark) and a rare one with lucario, do we really need another one in those category? I say meowth is the next best option

I say meowth is the next best option Zoroark isn't Legendary. Zoroark is in the same category as Lucario, only more exclusive as she is an Event Pokemon.
