I absolutely agree with you that Snake, Sonic, & Megaman should be the only 3 of the 3rd party category. Though I would not be surprised if we get a 4th one. But 3 is perfect in my opinion.
Hooray for DHD!!!
You now have me curious about this "joke" thing about Samurai Goroh cause I have never heard criticism about him, especially when it comes down to Smash Bros. The only negativity I ever heard about him is that he is yet a playable character in Smash Bros. Other than that, never heard anything negative. Both would be good choices and it is difficult to decide. It all matters to whoever decides to put him in. Though I have read that Sakurai really likes Goroh. I wish I find that source again since I dont remember where I read it from.
I have to disagree with replacing the original protagonists of S&P and GS with their successors. Yes, Isa & Matthew are currently relevant, but Isaac & Saki were the two heroes that made their respected series popular and brought the series to the public in the first place. For example, lets look at Marth. The original Hero of FE, yet by the time Melee came around, there were already a number of FE games that didnt feature Marth and had different protagonists. So why should it be different for Isaac & Saki? Correct anything that I might have gotten wrong.

Nearly everywhere I go, people do not want Goroh, but would rather have BS. (However, they want him to take Ganon's old moveset while Ganon gets a new one. I don't want that. I want both to have their own movesets.) And I often hear people refer to Goroh as a joke, a mockery to samurai, and an incompetent racer (referring to the fact that his son is better than he is).
Isa is part of the reboot of Sin and Punishment, not only that, but like Ness before him, has abilities his predecessor does not. (In Isa's case, a jetpack, which makes better recovery options). And it's a large gap between SaP1 and SaP2, so it's better to go with the one that is new, fresh, and actually was shown internationally without the use of Virtual Console.
Isaac, yes, is a big name, however, people seem to get the idea that Isaac is the star of two of the three games. He is not. He is only the star of the first. Felix was the star of the second, while Isaac was a supporting character. Matthew (like Ness), looks like his predecessor, has similar abilities (although in this case, I think he has the SAME abilities), and is recent (as Ness was for SSB64).
Why do I keep bringing Ness up? Because he was the one added, not Ninten. And Earthbound being released in America had nothing to do with it.

Sorry to double post again, but I'm heavily changing the Roster.
First off, I say screw the Forbidden 7 other than the Melee veterans (Mewtwo, Roy, and Dr. Mario) and Toon Zelda. So bye-bye Dixie, and Plusle & Minun.
Second, in P+M's place, I have Pichu coming back. This is because Pichu is a fan favorite of Melee and Smash needs a joke character.
3rd, instead of Dixie Kong, I have T-Rex from Fossil Fighters.

I really like to know where these negativity towards Goroh is coming from. I have never heard otherwise. I think I will do some more search on this cause this is very interesting. Smash Bros Youtube & IGN Smash Boards prefer him over BS. I think I will make a poll on the F Zero thread on IGN and see when the true F Zero fans think.
No matter if Sin & Punishment came to America though console or virtual console, Saki's game when international before Isa did regardless. The only thing that support Isa when it comes to international success is that his game was originally planned to be international unlike Saki whose game was Japan exclusive at first and later became international though VC. By the time Isa made his debut, Saki has grown a huge fanbase in both Smash Bros fans & Nintendo in general. Saki's fanbase is what S&P 2 to be international.
Now the same argument of Isaac & Matthew relates to Saki & Isa in a certain way.
The issue with having both Matthew & Isa represent their franchise respectfully is that the only thing they have going for them is that they are the current protagonist. Matter of fact, their fanbase compared to their fathers can't be similar because the only reasons Isa & Matthew are on several SSB4 fan-made rosters is because there are fans that believe that the most recent protagonist will take over that spot on the actual future Smash Bros roster. In the other hand, Saki & Isaac are far more popular characters than their successors. Isa & Matthew are only in SSB4 rosters due to the believe of relevance over popularity & familiar characters.

I like how you completely ignore my references to Ness.
EDIT: Also, Duck Hunt Dog has been replaced by Little Mac.
I've had a change of heart with Mac, so he's the new retro instead of DHD.

Not that I ignored the Ness reference, but I just wanted to point out the issues between the ancestors & successors of the S&P and GS series.
But now I would like to know why you think that Earthbound being released in America and not Mother 1 had nothing to do with Ness being added. I beg to differ. But that is my opinion.
I think that if Mother 1 had came to the states before Earthbound that we would have Ninten playable instead. At the time Smash Bros came to America, so has Ness & Earthbound. With Smash Bros going international they will obviously go with the character that went international first.
Not sure if Little Mac should represent the retro rep at this point. Even though Punch Out Wii was made to be a remake, there was already a spin off to the game that starred his coach and there are rumors of a Punch Out 2.

The reason why Earthbound being released in America doesn't matter is this: Smash Bros. was originally a Japanese exclusive title. www.n-sider.com/contentview.php?contentid=107"Originally planned as a small niche Japan only game, the title's gargantous sales and popularity influenced Nintendo to release its Mario Kart take on the fighting genre, outside of Japan." Why would Japan care who got in America or not (Ninten and Ness) if the game wasn't planned on being released in America? Ness was included because he was the latest hero. In Melee, he was planned to be cut and replaced by the hero of Mother 3 for the N64 before it got cancelled. Why? Because that hero was the latest one. Going by this, it was most likely Flint. (or Lucas/blonde kid) Because the game was cancelled, Ness stayed. You can find this on Ness' page on the Japanese Melee site: babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendo.co.jp%2Fn01%2Fn64%2Fsoftware%2Fnus_p_nalj%2Fsmash%2Fflash%2F0717%2Findex.html&lp=ja_en&btnTrUrl=TranslateTranslation is a little off, but it pretty much means what I've said. And I plumb forgot that Mac is no longer a "retro" character. Even so, he still replaces DHD. Takamaru is the only new retro I care about.

Sorry to double post again, but there are some changes on the changes. Here's a list of ALL changes. 0. MOST IMPORTANT: Slime and Ryu Hayabusa are gone, due to my belief that Megaman is the only one likely to be a 3rd Party Newcomer. Also, no more DLC. What it means for Duck Hunt Dog, you'll see later. 1. Matthew does NOT replace Isaac. I'm taking the Fire Emblem route with Golden Sun. 2. Isa STILL replaces Saki. I'm taking the Mother route with Sin & Punishment. 3. T-Rex is not in (turns out he's frigging massive, as the images I saw, he was HUNCHING). 4. Duck Hunt Dog is not gone, and he takes what would've been T-Rex's place. 5. Black Shadow STILL replaces Goroh, as Black Shadow has more moveset potential (because of the anime), is a villain (which we need more of), and above all else, can be given Ganondorf's moveset while Ganon gets a new one. 6. Shake King is on the Roster due to being a Wario character, a villain, a representative of Wario Land, a representation of what Wario truly is, and because I need some bias SOMEWHERE. 7. MB is gone because of her association with Other M, which has recieved heavy criticism. 8. Dixie Kong is gone. Don't bother asking, I have my reasons. 9. Toon Zelda no longer turns into Tetra. Toon Zelda instead has an attack for her Down Special. 10. Plusle and Minun are axed in favor of Pichu, as Pichu was in Melee, and is the Dan Hibiki of Smash Bros. 11. Little Mac is on the Roster. 12. A NEW Change: Vicitni replaces Zoroark. This is due to Victini being more revelant when SSB4 starts development, similar to Lucario during Brawl's development. Also, Vicitni has more signifigance in a multitude of ways.
That is all. The Roster is still 56 characters.

Either Victini, or Genesect, who might be released by the time development starts. Genesect is already very popular, with a fan-made Mewtwo-like backstory, and is at the top of the standard dream world tier list. All this before he's even released. Plus Genesect is humanoid, unique and a good representation of the "darker" side of Pokemon, like Mewtwo before him.
Pichu coming back might be a good idea, although he'd probably get a new moveset. Say, put electro ball as one of his moves (yeah, I got that idea from the thread on the Pikachu forum). I never thought of Pichu as the joke of Smash Bros though... I've always thought of Link as the joke of smash bros. Cause, you know, he's low tiered at everything, from the original SSB, to Multi-Man Brawl, to Soul Calibur II.

Alright, so I took a look at your roster, and here are my thoughts. Some good, some not. (Though it would be nice if I had the actual roster to look at.)
Toad: Alright. Toad is a good choice for a Mario character, with his recurring appearances and shown abilities. No complaints here!
Bowser Jr. / Shadow Mario: Bowser Jr. is definitely a top choice as a Mario rep for Brawl, being a major baddie in all of the recent games. However, I wouldn't have him transform, because that takes away from Zelda and Sheik's relationship, and it just isn't necessary for a character like Bowser Jr., who has so many other abilities to work off of.
K. Rool: Absolutely!
Toon Zelda: Yes.
Ridley: Alright!
Mewtwo: No. I'm going to be honest, Mewtwo was already removed. He was a cool character back when Melee was around, but he hasn't had any important or recent roles since then. Not to mention you brought back both removed Pokemon, didn't remove any from Brawl AND added 1 more on top of that. I would just flat-out remove Mewtwo; he served his purpose and now it's time to move on.
Pichu: Again, see the point above. Especially when you take into account that you have Dr. Mario as an alternate costume, why not Pichu? Pichu was removed, yada yada yada, and, like Mewtwo, Pichu was important back when Melee was around. There is no significant reason for Pichu to return, no vital rolls or important parts. Unless you count Pichu being the only Pokemon to learn Volt Tackle? :\
Victini: I originally thought that Zoroark would be the 5th gen rep, then I thought a 5th gen trainer. But then I took the Victini route. It made sense, and still does as a good 5th gen rep. I switched back over to Zoroark for the same reason that Lucario and Mewtwo were put in: Being popular and having important movie roles. But Victini is still a great choice with unique attacks.
Black Shadow: Ehhh, Samurai Goroh still seems like the F-Zero choice to me. He has been in every F-Zero game throughout the entire series. Plus, until now, I haven't heard anything negative about Goroh. he fits in perfectly with a great fighting style to use. Speaking of which, Goroh would be a katana user, a unique fighting style that could be worked into interesting strategies with Goroh's strength and size, whereas you would have BS pick up Ganondorf's moves, which are already considered to be cloned of Falcon's.
Roy: Again, same argument as all the other Melee characters.
Medusa: I don't think that there should be another Kid Icarus rep. If one was needed, Medusa would certainly be the choice, but at the moment, Pit's a classic character, like Ice Climbers or Lil' Mac.
Shake King: Shake King is a cool character with good potential, but I don't think of him as a high priority rep. Captain Syrup would better represent the Wario Land games, being in more, or you could go with someone like Kat & Ana to represent the WarioWare series. The Shake King just didn't seem to have that much impact compared to other characters.
Isa: If you're going to go with a recent character, go Mathew over Isa. Mathew and Isaac are nearly identical, while Saki better represents the series as a whole than Isa.
Isaac: Yes!
Tingle: Ehh, Tingle is a good character, and he is definitely up at top priority, but he should be with the Legend of Zelda characters, for balance.
Takamaru: Alright.
Chibi-Robo: I like this choice. I never actually considered Chibi-Robo as a character for SSB4, it would be a very unique character that would fit in well with Olimar being small characters. Maybe not the most realistic choice, but I really like this character.
Megaman: Yes.
Lil Mac: Yes.
Duck Hunt Dog: I still laugh a little when I see this as an idea for a Smash character, but actually looking into it, there's good merit as a Classic character for this. I mean, you could set him up with a comical shotgun as his main move and he could dig a hole for his down special. His recovery could involve being lifted by ducks, and anything goes for anything else. I actually like this character and it may have a possibility of getting in the game. I approve!
Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this, or I left out any characters.

This is actually an older roster. (Yes, it's my Final SSB4 Roster, but my next Rosters are called SSBU Rosters.)
As for what you said about a select few...
Bowser Jr.: The Shadow Mario persona has been since removed.
Toon Zelda: Not in the game.
Mewtwo: He appeared as a major boss in Pokemon Rumble, and appeared in a catchable state in HeartGold and SoulSilver. He is far from "irrelevant". Also, he is one of THE MOST requested characters to appear in the new Smash Bros., and he's NOT a Newcomer! The fact he also had an original moveset boosts his chances, so honestly, I can see Mewtwo returning and not anyone else cut from Melee.
Pichu: Is now an alternate selection to Pikachu like Dr. Mario. Also, it is popular in his own right because it's the Dan Hibiki of Smash. Given Pichu's latest major roles in the latest Pokemon Ranger and HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pichu is no longer irrelevant either. You really haven't done your research with Mewtwo or Pichu, have you?
Vicitni: Lucario is the only one that fits your description. Mewtwo was planned for Smash 64, as well as is a very popular Pokemon. It wasn't his movie role that brought him in. And unlike Lucario, Zoroark didn't catch on. Zoroark is already old news. And get this. A few months before Brawl stated development, Lucario's movie came out. In a few months, the new Smash will start development, and guess who's movies are most recent? Victini's. Also, Victini is a favorite of one of the developers of Pokemon, who's previous favorite was PICHU. Yeah, Vicitni has a lot more going for it than Zoro.
Black Shadow: Goroh is usually the butt of the joke among F-Zero fans. As for Black Shadow, he was the villain of the F-Zero anime (which before you say doesn't matter for Smash, remember that the anime featured the Falcon Punch as well. May not be relevant to the F-Zero series, BUT it's relevant to Smash), and even had POWERS in the anime that can be used in Smash. Goroh just swings a sword. Also, BS (LOL) was voiced by Norio Wakamoto, a VERY famous Japanese voice actor. He even stated that he would reprise his role as Black Shadow if he was in Smash Bros.
Roy: Roy has a big fanbase, as well as was planned for Brawl. And it isn't unheard of for a fighting game to bring back characters that were excluded in a sequel. It's happened before and it will most likely happen again.
Medusa: Pit no longer counts as retro due to Uprising which will be released before Smash Bros. Not only that, but SAKURAI is developing Uprising, and he's in charge of Smash.
Shake King: Just bias on my part. I understand that Captain Syrup is more "important", but I like Shake King more. However, I may add Jimmy T. in his place or along side him.
Isa: The Ness complex. Saki may have started the series, but Isa is the latest star that is in the first game to be released outside of Japan (not counting Virutal Console). Also, Isa has more options that Saki. Namely a recovery option (jetpack).
Tingle: Balance in uneeded except for Mario and Pokemon, which should be balanced to each other. Tingle is like Yoshi and Wario to where he can represent his own series.

Sorry 'bout the Roster confusion. I tried to put 2 and 2 together, and got fish.....
ANYWAYS!!!!!!!
When I said what I said about Mewtwo and Pichu, I was more referring to the fact that they were both hugely popular Pokemon at that time. It's not that I didn't do my research, (trust me, I have) it's that Pichu and Mewtwo haven't had enormous surges in popularity since Melee, at least not anymore then other characters. Or, at least from what I've seen on the internet and where I live is they lived out their welcomes well. I would love to have Mewtwo as a character, it just seems that he hasn't had a massive growth in popularity since Melee, not counting people freaking out that he was removed. And I agree with you, Mewtwo should be the top priority Melee character to return.
I have no problem with having Victini in the game, I approve of it. I wouldn't change that a bit. I just chose Zoroark over Victini.
Regarding BS, he, in all honesty, is a good choice. He is tied with Goroh for playabilty in the next game. I just think that Goroh would be a better choice because he is Captain Falcon's rival through all the games. However, Black Shadow serves as the main antagonist for the series, so he is also up there. And anime popularity is perfectly fine. That's the story behind Pikachu.
While this is true, we don't know if this is going to be the case for Smash games (though I hope it is). Even so, Roy had a similar fighting style to Marth, which could be fixed easily, but the problem is that we already have Ike, who is a heavier swords user that implements fire into his attacks. And this brings up another problem: This would make all of the Fire Emblem characters are swords users, without any of the other classes.
Regarding Kid Icarus, this isn't true. Many games have received modern sequels, like Lil Mac. But we would still call him a classic character. Just because Kid Icarus has had a new game doesn't make it a series like Mario or Fire Emblem.
Shake King does have importance, and he is also a unique choice that puts your mark on the roster. He could be a good character, so he's safe to keep in. For now, being the most recent Wario antagonist.
Isa could work, but the difference between Isa and Saki and Ness and Ninten is that Ness and Ninten's games were not separated by 9 years.
And this is not true. Legend of Zelda is a Nintendo franchise on par with Mario and Pokemon, and should be balanced as such. And yes, Tingle is to represent his own series, but so does Toon Link represent his Spin-Off series.

Post by GoldenYuiitusin on Aug 7, 2011 20:20:28 GMT -5
I'm not saying there shouldn't be as much Zelda characters as Mario or Pokemon, but I'm saying that it isn't a top priority. Zelda should have more characters than most series, but in all honesty, Mario and Pokemon should be tied since they were the first two series to get more than one character.
And NO. I am tired of explaining this. Wind Waker is NOT a spin-off! The "Toon" Zelda games are still Zelda games. Just in a different style. Tingle's games are Tingle games, not Zelda games. This is due to having no connections to Link, Zelda, Ganon, etc. in his games.
As for the FE deal, that really isn't a problem. It's just a problem to those who are very picky about things like swordsmen. As for Ike, only Eruption and Great Aether use fire, Roy would have most of his moveset with fire. AS well as being the only one of the three to have a projectile.
As for KI, classic and retro are not one and the same. Mario, is a classic. Ice Climber, is retro. Kid Icarus is no longer retro. And that fact allows him to be able to have a new character. And remember: SAKURAI is making Kid Icarus Uprising. And guess who's in charge of Smash? Sakurai.

One thing up first, you seem to be using different lingo then I've heard before, especially regarding character series. I've always heard of four different types of characters: Main recurring Nintendo series characters (Mario, Link, etc.), Misc. Characters (Olimar), Classic Characters (R.O.B., Pit, Ice Climbers, etc.) and 3rd Party Characters, Sonic and Snake. But maybe that's just me.
And I do believe that Legend of Zelda is top priority, being one of Nintendo's most important franchises. Not really sure why you took out Toon Zelda, either. But again, maybe that's just me.
Well, whatever you wish to call the Toon Games (Which have no story or time line connection to the main series *cough cough*) Tingle should still be grouped with the Legend of Zelda characters, because he is still a Legend of Zelda character, similarly to Yoshi and Wario.
For Fire Emblem, Roy wouldn't be as much as a problem if there weren't more qualified characters. Going off the newest game, Micaiah was the main character, as well as a female AND a light magic user. She wouldn't use a sword, like all of the FE reps do at the moment, and has a recent game to back her up.
See above for terms issue, but Kid Icarus is not on the same scale of series as Metroid or F-Zero, so why should it have the same amount of reps as those series? Yes, Sakurai is developing Uprising, but a 3rd game isn't enough to change Pit's status. Little Mac has had 3 game releases, one of which was on the Wii, but he would still be considered a Classic / Retro character. R.O.B. was in a bunch of the Mario Kart games, but he is still a Classic / Retro character. This game was also, from what I understand, started because of pit's appearance in Brawl, not just to have another Kid Icarus game. Not to mention that, in addition, Sakurai seems to be modest with his characters, waiting three games to put in more Kirby reps. Maybe Kid Icarus will be different, but I have a feeling it won't.

Micaiah is hated, as well as overshadowed by Ike. No two characters from the same game, please. If we were to have someone from the latest FE that was female and not a sword user, we would have Sheeda before Micaiah. A remake is still a new game in this regard. And both Marth's game got recent remakes. Despite this, neither will get in JUST because they're female, or JUST because they don't use swords.
Wind Waker is an alternate branch from OoT and MM. After those two, it stems into two alternate realities, WW, and TP. Saying WW isn't part of the main series is the same as saying TP isn't. And Toon Zelda was removed for Ghirahim, so it's not like there's one less Zelda character in my roster. And if you noticed, Wario and Yoshi have their own icons and represent their own series. They aren't grouped with Mario on my roster, and the only reason Donkey Kong is is because his series happens to come after the Mario series in Smash 64 order. Tingle is where he is because he is part of a newcoming series (Tingle series). However, because he's connected to the Zelda series, he is placed after Ghirahim on the Roster layout, which you don't see in the vid.
The only terms I follow are Retro (Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B. and formerly Pit), 3rd Party (Snake, Sonic), and Everybody Else. Cameo/Guest Appearance =/= New game. Which is why R.O.B. stays a retro character, and why Takamaru still counts as one despite being in Samurai Warriors 3. Being that Little Mac and Pit have new recent titles, they are no longer in Retro, and now belong with Everyone Else. And it pretty much is in the same scale as F-Zero now, as F-Zero is considered a dead series now. As for Metroid, there are 3 characters on my new Roster, so Metroid has more now. But then again, I don't see you arguing that Mother and StarFox are not on the same scale as F-Zero or Metroid, and yet they have more characters while Metroid and F-Zero still have only one in Brawl.

I'm sorry, but I find this hilarious. Now I agree that Tingle's a great character for Brawl, but you have him on your roster and you're saying Micaiah's hated? Tingle was basically banned from America! But anyways, rant over.
I would have to say that I would rather have two characters from one game then three characters who all use a sword from a game that features many many more fighting styles. I do like Shiida, it would be a good way to put a pegasus knight in and it's a better choice then Florina, who I originally had.
Not to be a quitter or anything, but the whole Toon LoZ thing's gone overboard. You call it what you want and I'll call it what I want. If I had known that Tingle was going to be after a LoZ character anyways, this all would have been avoided. Mah bad. Also, I didn't know that Ghiriham was in. I'm not sure what direction I'd go with him. He doesn't seem to be very important at first, but he does represent the newest game. Though, his odds of getting in are probably lessened by Toon Zelda's popularity to join. But looking into 'Debbie', he seems to be an evil mixture of Link and Zelda, combining magic with sword fighting, which could be interesting.
THOSE AREN'T THE COMMON TERMS!!!!!!!! Don't take that as rage, it's supposed to be a joke. What you say is kinda true, but Pit and Little Mac, Little Mac especially, are still retro/classic characters. Pit I can kind of understand changing him to his own series, but not Little Mac, because even the new Punch Out is classically styled after the originals.
And I'm not really sure what that argument means at the end... I didn't argue about those series because you didn't add a Mother OR Star Fox character, so I can't really argue against that... unless you think I have access to Sakurai to bug him about it? Because I actually argue that case as well... F-Zero and Metroid need more characters. That's why I added them to my roster. The reason they didn't is because there aren't very many recurring characters to excellently represent those games, where as Mother and Star Fox did... though they still managed to turn them all into clones... that's the best argument I could come up with, but it's not really my side of the argument. But ah well.
Also, R.O.B. wouldn't be as well known as he is if it wasn't for Mario Kart. Just a little piece o' my mind, there.

No, he wouldn't be as well known if it wasn't for Brawl. Do your research. R.O.B. wasn't put in because people liked him in Mario Kart. He's had more cameos than that as well. He was put in because he saved the friggin' video game industry. And because it would be a nice reference to the NES era.
No comment on anything else, just a R.O.B. fan being annoyed at people not doing their research.
